Metal Lathe Tool Names

Turning Tool: Used for general cutting along the length of the workpiece. Often called a "right-hand" or "left-hand" tool depending on which direction it cuts.

Facing Tool: Used to cut across the end of a workpiece to create a flat surface.

Boring Tool: Long tool used to enlarge or shape the inside of holes.

Parting Tool: Narrow tool used to cut off pieces from the main workpiece.

Threading Tool: Pointed tool with a specific angle used to cut threads (for screws, bolts, etc.).

Grooving Tool: Creates grooves or channels in the workpiece.

Knurling Tool: Creates a diamond pattern on the surface for grip (doesn't actually cut material).

Centre Drill: Makes small holes to support the workpiece between centres, or start a pilot hole to guide a large drill.

Form Tool: Shaped to create specific profiles or contours in a single pass.

Most modern shops now use replaceable carbide inserts mounted in tool holders rather than solid tools, but the basic functions remain the same.
